On 1 Jan 1968 New Zealand Dept of Maori Affairs merged with New Zealand Dept of Island Territories to become New Zealand Maori and Island Affairs Dept. On 1 Oct, 1968 the name changed to New Zealand Dept of Maori and Island Affairs. In 1975 Island Affairs was removed from the portfolio, becoming part of New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Department's name was changed back to New Zealand Dept of Maori Affairs. On 1 July 1989 New Zealand Dept of Maori Affairs was dissolved and it's functions taken over by New Zealand Ministry of Maori Affairs which was established on that date, and the New Zealand Iwi Transition Agency, which was established on 1 Oct. 1989. In 1992 New Zealand Ministry of Maori Affairs and New Zealand Iwi Transition Agency merged to form New Zealand Ministry of Maori Development
