Mahy, Margaret May, 1936-2012

Internationally acclaimed New Zealand children's writer. Born in Whakatane in 1936, eldest of five children, Mahy was first published in the Bay of Plenty Beacon at 7 years old. She studied at University of Auckland 1952-1954 and University of Canterbury 1955, graduating with a BA degree. Attended NZ Library School 1956 to 1958, leaving to work at Petone Public Library. In 1965 she moved to Governor's Bay, Lyttelton Harbour to bring up two daughters, working at the School Library Service from 1967, and as Children's Librarian at Christchurch Public Library from 1976. Mahy continued to write, from 1961 publishing stories in the School Journal where an American editor saw her 'Lion in the Meadow' story. In 1969 Franklin Watts published five Mahy stories as picture books, launching her international career. In the mid 1970s Mahy began writing junior fiction, and by the early 1980s, adolescent fiction and work for television. She has published over 120 titles and been translated into 15 languages. Winner of numerous awards including six NZ Library Association Esther Glen Medals (A Lion in the Meadow, 1969; The First Margaret Mahy Story Book, 1972; The Haunting, 1982; The Changeover, 1984; Underrunners, 1992); the Goodman Fielder Wattie Award for Junior Fiction (Underrunners); the British Library Associations Carnegie Medal (The Haunting; The Changeover); the Young Observer Fiction Prize (The Tricksters, 1986); the Italian Premier Grafico Award (The Wind Between the Stars, 1976) and the Dutch Silver Pencil Award (The Boy Who Was Followed Home, 1977). She has held writing fellowships in New Zealand, Australia and America, and in 1993 was awarded the Order of New Zealand and an honorary doctorate of the University of Canterbury. Mahy is a past President of the Christchurch Branch of PEN, and a PEN President of Honour 2002-2003. In 2005 she received the Prime Minister's Award for Literary Achievement and was awarded an Arts Foundation Icon Award. Recognition of her lasting contribution to children's literature came with winning the prestigious Hans Christian Award in 2006. Mahy won the 2011 NZ Post Children's Book Awards with 'The Moon and Farmer McPhee'.
