Aitken, Alexander, 1851-
Born in 1851 in Glasglow, Scotland. He was educated in Auckland, to which he came from Sydney with his parents, Alexander Aitken (1822-1858) and Eliza née Stirling (d 1889), by the ship "Moa" at Auckland in March 1855. Connected with the seed and auctionéering business, which was conducted under the name of Alexander Aitken Ltd and Hesketh & Aitken. He retired from business in 1890 and took up his residence at "Kereone", of which he was manager from 1893. He was a member of the Waitoa Road Board from 1893, and was for three years a member of the Piako County Council, on which he represented the Piako riding. He was married at St Mark's Church (Auckland) in 1881 to a Elizabeth Isaline Elise Quartier (d 1938 aged 76 years), daughter of watchmaker Mr Quartier, of Auckland, and had two sons - William James (1883-1960) and Arthur Heather (1885-1918).
