Davie, William Peterson, 1828-1913 : Journal of a voyage from Boston, USA to Melbourne,...

Date: 16 Sep 1863-28 Jan 1864

By: Davie, William Peterson, 1828-1913

Reference: MS-0665

Description: Journal of a journey by William Peterson Davie from Boston, on the ship `Aberdeen', to Melbourne, then by the steamer `Gothenburg' to Lyttelton, stopping briefly at Dunedin. He gives details shipboard life, comments on activities of passengers and crew, temperatures and barometric pressures, and distance travelled, and comments on the various ports visited including Melbourne, Auckland and Dunedin. Source of title - Transcribed from title page Quantity: 1 volume(s) (42 pages). Physical Description: Holograph (17 cm; limp black roan, in red linen slip case) Provenance: Diary written in ink, with `by C Davie" added in pencil to title page. Although in Cyrus Davie's hand, apparent when compared with his fair copy of his own 1850 journal in the collection (this is identified as being in Davie's hand by a note inside the front cover), the diarist was, in fact, Cyrus' brother William Peterson Davie, who was also a surveyor. According to G R MacDonald's Dictionary of Canterbury Biographies cards (Canterbury Museum), W P Davie went to the USA from Dorset, England, doing survey work, visiting San Francisco and Boston and doing the first city survey of Chicago (all of these places are mentioned in the diary). After approximately ten years in America he came to New Zealand where his brother, Cyrus, lived in Christchurch. William died in Wellington in 1913. The diary mentions "Cyrus" in two places, once in reference to Davie's 1850 voyage and at the end where "Cyrus" is waiting to greet his brother on the wharf at Lyttelton.

Description: Journal of Davie's voyage to Lyttelton on two of the Canterbury Association's ships. He trans-shipped mid-ocean (4 Oct 1850) to the `Randolph' from the `Sir George Seymour', his luggage having sailed with the `Randolph' after he missed the ship. Davie recorded daily entries, sometimes very brief and sometimes very detailed, often giving the position of the ship, describing the weather and shipboard activities. He continued the diary after landing at Lyttelton and in particular describes the progress of a lithograph he was doing. Source of title - First page Other - Original is on 4 sheets of blue paper, folded to make 16 pages Relationship complexity - This is a fuller version, in many respects, than the contemporary holograph copy at MS-0666 (also in Davie's hand) though the latter has entries not in this one, but ends on 28 Dec 1850. The typescript at MS-0667 appears to have been made from this Canterbury Museum holograph, which also holds another similar but not identical typescript. Cyrus Davie was a Canterbury surveyor Quantity: 1 folder(s) (14 leaves). 0.01 Linear Metres. Davie, Cyrus, 1821-1871 : Journal of a voyage from Plymouth to Port Victoria, or Cooper...

Date: 8 Sep-28 Dec 1850, 9 Jan 1851

By: Davie, Cyrus, 1821-1871

Reference: MS-0666

Description: Diary describes voyage to New Zealand on the `Sir George Seymour' and the `Randolph'. Davie trans-shipped in mid-ocean (4 Oct 1850) to re-join his luggage which had sailed with the `Randolph', Davie having missed the ship. Note concerning the `first Canterbury lithograph' drawn by Davie and enclosed with the diary when it was originally sent, is dated 9 Jan 1851. Source of title - Transcribed from title page. Relationship complexity - Typescript version at MS-0667 has significant differences to this holograph and is from the longer original at the Canterbury Museum Archives. The latter is on 4 loose sheets of blue paper, folded to make 16 pages. There are significant textual differences between the two holographs. The Canterbury Museum original has entries for every day though some are short; the Turnbull Library version has fuller entries in places with new information based on further reflection but omits some days completely; some text is obviously intended for a non-New Zealand audience. Cyrus Davie was a Canterbury surveyor Quantity: 1 volume(s) (53 pages). Physical Description: Holograph (18 cm; blue calf) Provenance: A contemporary fair copy of the diary which, according to a hand-written note at the front, is in the author's own hand Ink and pencil sketch map at rear shows voyage route
