Born Albert Edwin Ekins in Ware, Hertfordshire in May 1840, the son of George and Elizabeth Ekins. As a young man, he learnt photolithography in Southampton, and later studied for the priesthood in Belgium. He left his studies, and the Catholic Church, changed his name to Herbert Deveril, and emigrated to Australia. He operated photographic studios in Melbourne between 1864 and 1873 (see "The Mechanical eye in Australia" p154). He arrived in Wellington in 1873 to take charge of photolithographic department of Government Printing Office. He took photographs for NZ Government stand, Philadelphia Exhibition of 1876 and operated a a studio in Wellington from 1873 until ca 1882, in which year he was declared bankrupt. He lived in Auckland until ca 1891, and in later years he invested in ostrich farming in South Africa. He returned to Australia, and in 1901 moved to North Queensland. Description: Elevated view looking down over the township of Port Chalmers and across the Otago Harbour to Quarantine Island, Goat Island (with single men's quarantine barracks visible) and beyond to the Otago Peninsula (Mt Charles on left and Harbour Cone on right). In the immediate foreground (on left) is the old cemetery. In the foreground there is a railway wagon and large stockpile of rocks waiting to be shifted. In foreground to the right is the cutting for the main Trunk Railway. Retail shops and commercial premises in George Street can be seen, including those of James Menelaus, James Bosworth Taylor (painter & paperhanger) & Simmonds & Sons.
