The ship is likely to be the steamer Maori. Hodgkins travelled through Acheron Passage aboard the Maori on 17 March 1875, and made a pencil sketch closely resembling this watercolour in his sketchbook, reference number E-401-034. The date on the album page is likely to reflect the date at which he painted the watercolour version
