Earnshaw, William, 1852-1931

Engineer and politician. Born in England; travelled in United States, Australia and New Zealand, settling in Christchurch 1878. Worked at Addington workshops, then, in 1881 as a brassfounder at Anderson & Morrisons in Dunedin. Elected as Liberal Member of Parliament for Peninsula 1890; expelled from the Liberal Party in 1893 but won the City of Dunedin seat as an Independent. Stood unsucessfully for Wellington 1900; then worked on a beach dredging property at Gillespie's in Westland. Afterwards employed by the Wellington Harbour Board.
