Paynter, Bill, 1949-

New Zealand cartoonist. Began working as a freelance cartoonist for The Christchurch Star in 1967. At the time he was also training as a textile designer with Feltex Carpets and in the evenings continuing study at the Ilam School of Fine Arts. Later employed as a commercial artist with The Press and contributed political cartoons to that paper on an occasional basis. He exhibited his cartoons in a joint exhibition with Trace Hodgson. In 1981 he moved to Auckland to work at the New Zealand Herald as an artist. In 1987 he left to work for The National Business Review. He left the NBR in 1991 and established his own design studio involved with computer illustration, advertising, cartoons and magazine design. Between 1992 and 1995 he was a regular weekly cartoonist with The Independent. [Source: Published biographical information]
