Beetham, Dick, 1836-1912

Born Horncastle, York, England, eldest son of artist and farmer William Beetham and his wife Mary, née Horsley. To Australia 1853, and was in Wellington by 1855, when his parents and the rest of his family arrived on 1 December. Initially worked as a surveyor on the Rimutaka Hill Road in Wellington. Visited Samoa in the 1880s. Resided in the North and South Islands and held office in the public service and as a stipendiary magistrate at Napier, Timaru, and Christchurch. Died in Masterton. Exhibited oil paintings in New Zealand in 1880s and 1890s. Married (1) Lucelle Frances Swainson (died 1910) and (2) Helen Hampton, in 1910. There were no children.
