Blair, John Rutherfurd, 1843-1914

Printer, publisher, bookseller, businessman, educational administrator, mayor. Born in Scotland, he left Britain for Otago in 1860, and then to Australia for gold digging. He moved to Wellington in 1869 and entered into partnership with William Lyon. Lived first on Vivian Street, and later on Wellington Terrace (The Terrace). Bookbinder, trading as Lyon & Blair Ltd. Lyon & Blair was eventually sold to Whitcombe & Tombs and Mr Blair dedicated his energies to education, becoming Chairman of the Education Board.He was also chairman of the Board of Governors of Wellington College for many years, until 1899. He was on the board of directors of many companies including Wellington Investment, Trustee, and Agency Company, the Paparoa Coal Mining Company, the Wellington Woollen Manufacturing Company, and the Gear Meat Company and E. W. Mills and Company. See DNZB (Vol 2, 1870-1900, p44-45). Name as J R Blair in photographic album Pa1-q-120, p23. Husband of Jean Cowan Blair (d 1932), and father of James Cowan Blair (1871?-1887) who died at The Collegiate School, Wanganui, aged 16. Buried in the family plot at Bolton Street Cemetery, Wellington
