Maskell, William Miles, 1839-1898

Farmer, entomologist, administrator. Came to Canterbury in 1860, where he farmed in North Canterbury and Kaikoura. Elected to the Provincial Council and was provincial secretary and treasurer in 1875. Was Registrar of the University of New Zealand 1876-1898. A prominent entomologist, he was also noted for his descriptions of the Weka Pass rock paintings, and as a natural history collector. Son of William Miles Maskell (1814-1890).
