Pearse, John, 1808-1882

Arrived Wellington 1851, returned to England 1856. A solicitor, born in Bedfordshire, who came to New Zealand to settle. His family was unable to follow. An amateur artist and keen observer of colonial life. Disembarked from the 'Duke of Portland' in Auckland 25 Oct 1851, then travelled on the 'Cashmere' to Wellington, via New Plymouth, Nov 1851. Owned land on The Terrace and in Tinakori Road. Settled in Wellington; visited Nelson on the schooner 'Henrietta' May-Jun 1852. Also visited Lyttelton, Akaroa (during his voyage to Auckland), Wanganui and the Wairarapa. Admitted to the NZ Supreme Court Dec 1853. Left Wellington on the schooner 'William Alfred' for Sydney on 1 Mar 1856, then continued to England.
