Manawatu Railway Company, W M Ry Co
Founded, 1881, by Wellington Chamber of Commerce, initially in complete work on the Wellington-Johnsonville line begun by government in 1879 but halted in 1880; first trains to Paremata ran in 1885 and entire railway to Longburn, near Palmerston North, completed in Oct 1886. The government exercised its option and nationalised the line in 1908, for £900,000.
