Evans, Malcolm Paul, 1945-

Beginning with his hometown paper, the Bay of Plenty Times in Tauranga, and with two stints on the NZ Herald from 1970 till 1978 (when he succeeded Sir Gordon Minhinnick) and from 1997 till 2003, Malcolm Evans has been a cartoonist for most of his working life. Twice Qantas Cartoonist of the year and many times a finalist, by the 2000s he was supplying daily editorial cartoons for the Christchurch Press, the Timaru Herald and the Manawatu Standard, while also producing fortnightly cartoons of his popular farming character Edna and her husband, for NZ Rural News, and two sets of dairy related cartoons for NZ Dairy News and Dairy News Australia. In addition to having published 12 books of Edna cartoons and three collections of editorial cartoons, that included several cartoons critical of Israel which ultimately saw him sacked from the Herald, Malcolm Evans also illustrates books and magazines, produces caricatures for presentation, paints in acrylic and oils, and also sculpts in bronze. Evans worked for the Rural News from 1990. Cartoonist also for Bay of Plenty Times 1963-1965 and 1967-1970, Farm Equipment News 1978-1990, Express Star (UK) 1966. Previously worked in advertising for Bay of Plenty Times. Sculptor (bronze). Runs an Organic Fertiliser Company. (Date of information from interviewee form completed by the cartoonist in June 2001, held in New Zealand Cartoon Archive)
