Evans, Frederick John Owen (Sir), 1815-1885

First Officer aboard H. M. S. Acheron, during her hydrographic survey of New Zealand waters, 1849-1851. Also an artist, whose work is held in the Alexander Turnbull Library, in the National Maritime Museum (London) and at the Hydrographer of the Navy, (Taunton, England). He entered the Navy in 1828. He became Superintendent of the Compass Department of the Navy, wrote learned publications, achieved the rank of full captain in 1872 and became Hydrographer to the Admiralty between 1874 and 1884.
