Cartoonist and illustrator. Born in Hawera and moved to Wellington by 1907. Worked as a clerk for Dept of Lands and Survey, 1918-1923, then spent a year at St Martin's School of Art, London. Worked briefly as a cartoonist for the New Zealand Times then became "The Dominion" newspaper's first staff cartoonist. Was made redundant during the second world war for three years, then returned to the Dominion until 1950. In addition to cartoons, he produced drawings of fairies, flowers, birds and Maori goblins. From 1951 he worked for Palmerston North Country Library Service. He published two books of his Dominion cartoons in 1932 and three sets of his cartoons were published posthumously. He also illustrated a number of books in between 1939 and 1962. Copyright in his work may be held by his son, Mr Bill Paterson. See Who's who in NZ 1968 9th edition.
