Brittan, William Guise, 1809-1876

In England Brittan was a newspaper proprietor and editor; married Louisa Chandler. Actively involved in the Canterbury Association and arrived at Lyttelton on the 'Sir George Seymour', 17 Dec 1850, and put in charge of the Land Office. Appointed Resident Magistrate and Chief Commissioner of the Waste Lands Board in 1856. Chairman of Halswell Road Board, 1867 and active in church and sporting affairs. Brother of Joseph Brittan (1805-1867); father of Rev Frederick George Brittan, Louisa Brittan and William Guise Brittan Jnr. See DNZB / Scholefield (Vol 1, p94-95).
