Cousins, Thomas Selby, 1840-1897

TSC, 1840-1897

Artist, watercolourist, illustrator and cartoonist, who drew for the Illustrated New Zealand herald (entwined initials TSC). Born in England, son of engraver Henry Cousins, and nephew of engraver Samuel Cousins. Came to New Zealand in 1863-64 and worked in Acland woolshed at Mt Peel. Exhibited NZ Exhibition Dunedin 1865. Went to Australia some time in 1867 and illustrated Marcus Clarke's "For the term of his natural life" which came out in serial form in a Melbourne newspaper. Back in Christchurch before 1876, and illustrated for Illustrated NZ herald between 1872 and 1879, as well as 1893. (See Ian Grant's "The unauthorised version", page 34-35). A cousin of the artist L W Wilson. (Listed in Platts' "Nineteenth century NZ artists")
