Barrett's Hotel (Lambton Quay, Wellington, N.Z.), Dicky Barrett's Hotel (Wellington, N.Z.), German Brown's Hotel (Wellington, N.Z.)

Thorndon's first pub, existed on Lambton Quay for 150 years. It was named after its first owner Richard (Dicky) Barrett. The first Barrett's Hotel was a two-storey prefabricated building erected in an unfinished state in early 1840 and situated at the northern end of Lambton Quay. It was opened for use in October 1840. Barrett, suffering from losses in his whaling business, gave up the hotel in 1841 and returned to Taranaki. The second Barrett's Hotel was situated at the southern end of Lambton Quay and was in place by 1844. Proprietors included Charles Suisted, Charles (German) Brown.
