Description: Photographs of Samoa, related to the period when Donald Alexander john Rutherford was a teacher, and then Superintendent of Schools in Samoa, between 1922 and 1936. Inside the front cover is a list of names of over a hundred native Samoan teachers who trained in Western Samoa during that period. There are group portraits of members of staff in the Samoan Education Department, teachers, students, sports teams; groups of boy scouts on parade; and one of a group attending the Conference on the Education of Native Races in the Pacific held in Honolulu in 1936. Several images show local and visiting dignitaries, including the Duke of Gloucester, Sir Herbert Hart, General Richardson, and Lord Bledisloe; and the visit to Samoa of a group of New Zealand teachers. Many of the images relate directly to the farewell ceremonies held at the departure from Samoa of Donald Alexander John Rutherford and his family in 1936. Many views show aspects of military training in the desert, including machine guns, rifles, manoeuvres, Bren guns, range practice, and anti-tank guns. New Zealand Divisional Cavalry. In England military training and preparation includes scenes of the New Zealand High Commissioner in London, William Joseph Jordan, watching New Zealand lumberjacks from the New Zealand Forestry Corps in a Gloucester forest felling trees for war purposes. Also related to England are scenes of the Duke of Gloucester inspecting troops, and King George VI at an investiture at Buckingham Palace investing Flight-Sergeant Williams with his Distinguished Flying Medal for gallantry in air operations. Long Range Desert patrols and expeditions into enemy territory showing the difficult terrain they had to negotiate. Views of a formation of five American-built Lockheed Hudson aircraft of the RAF Coastal Command carrying out an action patrol near Borkum, Heligoland and the Danish Coast. They are the first released photographs taken while under fire from German anti-aircraft ships, flying only 200 ft above the sea because of the weather (p 15-21). One image shows a wireless operator checking one of H.M. the King's homing pigeons, presented to the RAF to carry messages in case of a forced landing & breakdown of wireless. Arrival of NZ airmen & pilots for duty with the RAF in 1941. Description: Travels of HMS "Sussex" from Britain to Australia, New Zealand, and Melanesia during 1934 and 1935. The first section is a tour to Australia with the Duke of Gloucester from September to November 1934. This section has images of the Duke, the crew at play and performing during crossing the line ceremonies. There is a view of sailors in their sleeping quarters and others sleeping on deck. Places depicted are Sri Lanka, and Australian cities Fremantle, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, and Hobart. Following are photographs taken during a summer cruise from 28 February to 18 April 1935. This was from Sydney to Lord Howe Island to New Zealand and back to Sydney via Hobart, Tasmania. In New Zealand the ship called into Russell, Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin. There are views of Russell, Auckland and Wellington, and others recording a trip to Ohinemutu and Rotorua. After its return to Sydney, HMS Sussex went on a spring cruise lasting from 16 July until 15 November 1935. This consisted of a visit to the Island groups in Melanesia via Brisbane and the Great Barrier Reef. In the Solomons the ship visited Faisi, Tulaghi (in the Florida Islands), Hog Harbour (Espiritu Santo), Vila (on Efate Island), and Tanna Island. In the Loyalty Islands it called into Sandal Bay (Lifou Island), then on to Noumea (New Caledonia), returning to Australia and ultimately Sydney. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
