Bright, John, 1811-1889

MP for Manchester from 1843-1857 but lost his seat there when he opposed the Crimean War. Within a few months he became one of the two MPs for Birmingham, a seat he held for 30 years. He was a Quaker, and campaigned against the power and wealth of the established church, and of the aristocracy. Throughout his life he campaigned for causes which would improve the lives of working people. [Source: www.birmingham.gov.uk]
