German-born Wellington hotelier (The Commercial in Lambton Quay) and landowner in the Hutt Valley in the 1840s. Arrived in Wellington on the ship 'Adelaide' in 1840. Killed in the Wellington earthquake of 1855. According to the newspaper account of the earthquake on 25 January, he had 'some months previously suffered from an apoplectic stroke ... He was struck in the body by portions of the brickwork of the fire-place of the room in which he was sitting, and died immediately.' Signed his name `Alsdorf' in undated letter to Donald McLean.
