New Zealand Armed Constabulary Force

From 1846 onwards, a national force formed from various militia as the first national force, originally to combat Maori 'hostiles' and to keep civil order. (The Dictionary of New Zealand English, edited by HW Orsman). In 1867 .. formed into a colonial regular army (Belich, James. New Zealand Wars). - VH. Remained in existence until 1885, and that year also saw the end of the occupation of redoubts.
