Visited New Zealand in April 1869 as the Captain of HMS Galatea and stayed three weeks. In 1870 he returned, staying for six days between 27 August and 3 September, while still Captain of the HMS Galatea, and commander of a Squadron of four ships, and visited Wellington. During his first visit of 1869, Alfred visited Dunedin, Christchurch, Auckland, Thames and Wellington. Alfred also made an official visit to New Zealand (8 December 1870-16 January 1871). He was escorted throughout his tour by a 'native contingent' of Arawa troops. He viewed the Pink and White Terraces, and stayed at Te Wairoa.
