The photographs were given to the society by the late Mrs Claire Burdan, whose husband was descended from Richard & Mary Prouse, and from the Dixon family, of the Dixon aerated water business. The photographs appear to have come from these families.

He visited New Zealand in 1869 and again in 1870. The catalogue includes references to his visits to New Zealand on p. 46-47 with homages (illuminated addresses) from Lyttelton in 1869, and from Hokitika, the Freemasons of Canterbury, the Maori and the Province of Auckland in 1870, along with photographs from the Turnbull's collection of the triumphal arch in Christchurch and other entertainments associated with the Duke's visit in 1870.
