Martin, Josiah, 1843-1916

Teacher, educationalist, lecturer, photographer. Known years of operation as a photographer 1881-1912. (Auckland City Libraries Photographers database) Opened a studio with WHT Partington (see photograph PA2-1114 and DNZB). After partnership was dissolved, he opened another studio, but later sold the portrait business to Charles Hemus, so he could concentrate on topographical and ethnological subjects. Took photographs in Fiji, Samoa and other Pacific Islands which he appears to have visited in 1898 and 1901 (in 1901 he travelled with S Percy Smith). (From DNZB).
