McIntyre, Duncan, 1915-2001

Farmer, soldier, politician. Born in Hastings 10 Nov 1915. MacIntyre saw active service during World War II, including a period with J-Force, in occupied Japan and rose to be the last commanding officer of 28 Maori Battalion. He subsequently had a distinguished parliamentary career as National MP for Hastings, 1960-1972; for Bay of Plenty and also East Cape, 1975-1984. He was Deputy Prime Minister under Sir Robert Muldoon. He died in Waipukurau, 8 Jun 2001. Father of Hamish MacIntyre (b 1951). Personal papers held at Archives New Zealand.
