Kinsey, Joseph James (Sir), 1852-1936

Christchurch businessman, collector and Antarctic enthusiast. Donor of a large collection to the Alexander Turnbull Library in 1937. Born in Kent, England and after teaching, married Sarah Ann Garrard and emigrated to Christchurch in 1880. Founded the shipping firm of Kinsey and Company. On Board of Governors at Canterbury University College 1894-1897, Commissioner for Canterbury at the South Seas Exhibition in Dunedin 1889-1890 and Belgian Consul in 1898. He was a keen amateur musician and book collector, as well as being deeply interested in Antarctic exploration. He was the agent in New Zealand for Shackleton's "Nimrod Expedition", 1907-1909, and again for Scott's "Terra Nova Expedition", 1910-1913. His summer house "Te Hau o Te Atua" (Breath of Heaven), was situated on Clifton Hill above Sumner and was the site of a party to farewell the officers and members of Shackleton's Nimrod Expedition in November 1908. Made Knight Bachelor in 1917.
