Eccles, Alfred, 1821-1904

Born Surrey, England. Sailed for Otago as surgeon on the 'Chile' in 1861; his wife died during the voyage. First Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons to practise in Otago. From 1864 he assisted the Otago Provincial Government in public health matters, sanitary commissions etc. Involved in many other public matters, Hon. Sec. of the New Zealand Exhibition (1865); Otago Acclimatisation Society and Otago Institute. Married again in 1869 to Mrs Mary Nelson (née Jones) and returned to England in 1871 with his family to reside in Devon, briefly visiting New Zealand again 1887-1888. Died Plymouth, Devon.
