Norman, Edward, 1820-1875

Surveyor and artist. Born Devonport, England. He was in New Zealand from 1842, initially as a survey cadet working under S. C. Brees in Wellington. He returned to England in 1845, and was back in New Zealand by 1852. In 1852 He was sent to Kaikoura to survey the peninsula but met with much opposition from Maori who attempted to prevent him from completing the survey. He was living in Lyttelton between 1854 and 1858. Between 1862 and 1864 he worked at Haldon Station, South Canterbury, as a boundary rider. During 1866 he tried his hand at goldmining in Otago. He later lived at Sawdon Station. He died and is buried at Burke Pass, South Canterbury. Listed as Edward Norman in C A Lawn's `The Pioneer land surveyors of New Zealand', (qMS-1138, p 204-205).
