King, Martha, 1803?-1897

Teacher, artist, gardener. New Zealand's first resident botanical artist, though her principal occupation was as a schoolteacher. Born in Ireland probably in 1802 or 1803. Arrived in Wellington aboard 'London', 13 Dec 1840. Foundation settler in Wanganui, with her older sister Maria King, and older brother Samuel Popham King. In December 1847, the family moved to New Plymouth. See DNZB (1990, Vol 1, 1769-1869, p227-228)
