Kopeeks (Pseudonym), 1859-1904, Nairn, James M, 1859-1904

Wellington artist and art teacher, who used the pseudonym "Kopeeks" for cartoons published in the Evening Press in about 1890. Born in Dumbartonshire, Scotland, son of Archibald Nairn and Catherine Rennie, he studied at the Glasgow School of Art 1879-1883. Arrived in Wellington via Otago in 1890, supporting himself by painting and drawing cartoons (Including "Strike notes", a record of the Australasian Maritime Strike). Taught at Wellington Technical School from 1891, and was on the council of the Academy of Fine Arts 1890-1903. In 1892 formed the Wellington Art Club which met at Silverstream at `Pumpkin Cottage' rented by Nairn. In 1898 he married Ellen Smith (1879?-1955). See DNZB (Vol 2, 1870-1900, p344-345)
