Atkinson, Maria, 1824-1914, Richmond, Jane Maria, 1824-1914, Richmond, Maria, 1824-1914

Letter-writer, community leader. Maria Richmond was a prominent member of the group of families (including the Richmonds, Atkinsons and Hursthouses) who settled in the New Plymouth area, in the 1840s and 1850s. Maria and her mother, also Maria but known as Lely, travelling with other Richmond and Atkinson family members, arrived at New Plymouth in 1853, on the "Sir Edward Paget" (her father Christopher Richmond was already deceased). Maria married Arthur Samuel Atkinson, whom she met on board ship during the voyage, towards the end of 1854. They had five children: Margaret (b 1856, died at birth); Edith Emily (b 1858); Ruth (b 1861); Arthur Richmond (b 1863) and Alice Mabel (b 1864). By 1858 the families were well established at Hurworth. Arthur was frequently away, either as a military volunteer (with the Bushrangers) during the Taranaki Wars of the 1860s or as an MP in Auckland and Wellington. They moved to Nelson in 1868 where Arthur became a legal assistant to his brother-in-law, Judge C W Richmond. Arthur went into partnership with Charles Yates Fell. Apart from an extended trip (1877-1881) to England and Europe, accompanied by various children from the families, Maria spent the rest of her life at her home "Fairfield" at Nelson. She died there, aged 90 years, in 1914. (Book of NZ Women)
