Penguin (Ship : 1864-1909)

The SS Penguin of 749 tons, was built in 1864 by Messrs Todd & McGregor at Glasgow for a British company. She was owned by the Union Steam Ship Co., from 1879-1909. On night of Feb 12 1909, she struck a rock in Cook Strait and foundered with the loss of 75 lives. See Ships with New Zealand Associations (Vol 7, p 33)
