Lawyer, mayor, politician and prime minister. The eldest son of Sir Francis Dillon Bell and Margaret Bell. In 1878 he married Caroline Robinson (1853?-1935). Educated in UK, he returned to New Zealand, where he became Crown Solicitor in Wellington (1878-1911) and President of the Law Society (1908-1918). He was elected mayor of Wellington in 1891. Member of Parliament for Wellington City 1893-1896. In 1912 became leader of the Legislative Council, and was a Minister 1912-1919. Was three times acting Prime Minister and temporarily Prime Minister after Massey's death in 1925. Minister of External Affairs and Attorney-General 1925-1928. KCMG, 1915, GCMG, 1923 and Privy Councillor, 1926. Married Caroline Robinson (daughter of Hon William Robinson) in 1878. See DNZB (Vol 2, 1870-1900, p34-36)
