Artist. Born Tewkesbury, Gloucester, England, 18 December 1815, to William and Elizabeth Merrett. Resident in Australia, and then Auckland by 1841. He worked in Auckland in the 1840s. In 1841 he travelled in the central North Island with Ernst Dieffenbach and Abel Dottin Best. His drawings from this travel were retained by Dieffenbach. In 1843, he married Rangitetaea Koa, a Waikato woman of Ngati Koura iwi. Their first child was born the same year. Under the patronage of George Grey he made drawings of the central North Island, with some works dated 1848, for two pictorial scrapbooks in the British Library (Add MS 19953 and 19954). In 1843 he also contributed to the New Zealand album for Mrs Eliza Hobson (E-216-f in the Turnbull Library). By 1851 he was in Taranaki, and in Wanganui in 1852. He died in New Zealand on 22 December 1854. [See Una Platts' "Nineteenth century New Zealand artists" 1979; see also Artists' biographies card-drawers in Drawings, Paintings & Prints.
