Sainson, Louis Auguste de, 1800-

French artist on board Dumont d'Urville's voyage to the Pacific and New Zealand in 1826-29. According to his service record, he was born in Paris on 26 April 1800 (Dumont d'Urville gives 1801 in the "Histoire du voyage"), and began his naval career in a secretarial position at the Atlantic port of Rochefort (1825-26). He volunteered to serve on the Astrolabe as draughtsman and joined the ship at Toulon in February 1826. Thereafter until the return to France (1 April 1829) he earned his monthly salary of 100 francs producing a total of nearly 500 drawings in three years. From 1829 to Dec. 1834, he was part of editorial team preparing the official account of the voyage for publication. He was the sole illustrator for Dumont d'Urville's 'Voyage pittoresque autour du monde' (1834). He also edited the atlas illustrating the voyage of the Favorite. He resigned from the navy in 1836, and was employed by Count (later Prince) Demidov, perhaps until the 1860s. He was a friend of the Napoleonic artist Raffet, who painted his portrait. Death date of 1887 remains unsourced. (Info. from Dr Roger Collins, 1991 and 1994).
