Jervois, William Francis Drummond (Sir), 1821-1897
Military engineer, colonial governor. Commissioned in Royal Engineers in 1839. He worked at the Cape of Good Hope from 1841 to 1852. He was promoted to Major in 1854 and rose to be Lieutenant-General and director of works for fortifications in 1862. Carried out survey of Australian and New Zealand defences in 1877. Governor of Straits Settlements 1875-1877, Governor of South Australia 1877-1882, Governor of New Zealand 1883-1889. See DNZB (Vol 2, 1870-1900, p243-244)
