Canterbury Provincial Council, Canterbury Provincial Government

Formed in 1853 until the abolition of provincial government in 1876.

Buildings situated at 280-284 Durham Street, Christchurch. Constructed to house the Canterbury Provincial Government. Designed by architect Benjamin Mountfort. The timber building was constructed in 1858 and the Stone Chamber in 1865. These buildings were substantially damaged in the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake.

Legislative Chamber (also known as the Great Hall, Stone Chamber or the Parliamentary Chamber) constructed between 1864-1865 - building collapsed in the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake.
