Clerk of Land Office, Wellington. Born in London, England. He was brought up to the trade of a hatter. When he was 33 years of age he emigrated to New Zealand in the ship 'Oriental' with his wife Martha, which arrived here in 1840, his intention being to start in business with Mr. Duppa, who came out at the same time. Mr. Duppa, however, went on to Auckland soon after landing here, but before he left for the North he recommended Mr. Lewis to Col. Wakefield, and this gentleman took the subject of our notice into the service of the New Zealand Company, and he occupied the position of Land Commissioner. Wrote to Donald McLean re map of New Plymouth settlement (undated letter); wrote to R Strang from Land Office in 1864. David Lewis, who was for many years connected with the New Zealand Company. Mr Lewis leved off Tinakori-road for many years, and Lewisville-terrace is named after him (See obituary - Evening Post, 17 October 1892, page 3).
