Kawiti, Te Ruki, -1854

Nga Puhi leader, warrior. Born 1770s?. Signed the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. In 1845 he joined forces with Hone Heke in challenging British authority/sovereignty over Maori land. Kawiti and Heke fought in the Northern New Zealand war in 1845 - the British launched 3 expeditions into the Bay of Islands, the third at Ruapekapeka Pā (Kawiti's Pā) which they heavily bombarded for two weeks.
