Significant Maori leader of Ngati Ruanui and Te Ati Awa. Peacemaker, politician. Was the son of Ngatata-i-te-Rangi and was also called Te Teoteo, or Makoere. Born Taranaki, as an adult was resident at Nauranga and in the Hutt Valley. He was a supporter of Kingitanga, a Catholic opposed to the Pai Marire movement, and one of the first Maori members of the Legislative Council, 1872-1887. Chief of Kumutoto Pa (Woodward Street), Wellington, ca 1840. Wi Tako Ngatata married Mereana Ngamai on July 1, 1846 at Wellington. The marriage was witnessed by Panapa.
