Plimmer, John, 1812-1905
Settler and businessman of Wellington. Born in Upton-Maona, Shropshire, England. Arrived in New Zealand with his first wife Eliza and three children as steerage passengers on the ship 'Gertrude' in 1841. In 1850 Plimmer towed the wreck of the American ship 'Inconstant' to the foreshore near Lambton Quay, Wellington, and built a pier to it. He established a warehouse and auction rooms there which became known as `Noahs Ark' (later known as Plimmer's Ark). See Encyclopedia of New Zealand by McLintock Vol 2, page 787. Buried in Bolton Street Cemetery, Wellington
