Herrick, Jasper Liners, 1833-1890

Soldier, runholder and botanist. Ensign, 67th Regiment; Captain, Napier Militia 1863; served on East and West Coast; commanded No 2 Company AC at Poutu 1869. Officer in the Colonial Defence Forces during the New Zealand wars. Was a member of the Waikaremoana Expedition during the Hauhau rebellion. His first wife, Lydia, died 1868. Married Emily Duncan 1870; took over Forest Gate Station, Onga Onga, from J Russell Duncan. On Hawke's Bay Provincial Council representing Hampden 1878; opened the first Onga Onga school.Died from fall at Waihi waterfall on his Oporae property, near Dannevirke, while collecting fern specimens.
