Researcher, campaigner and lecturer in early childhood education. Born at Springfield, Canterbury, she attended Wharenui School, Christchurch, and later Christchurch Girls' High School, Canterbury University College and Christchurch Teachers' College. Educationalist, founder of Playcentre movement. Maiden name Alley; sister of Rewi and Geoffrey Alley, married Hugh Crawford Dixon Somerset (1895-1968). See http://www.dnzb.govt.nz/dnzb/
