Presbyterian minister, politician. In 1931 he married Frances Maria Kernahan. Ordained Presbyterian minister; New Zealand Labour Party politician; Minister of Health, 1941-1947; 1947-1949, Minister of Industries and Commerce; later Minister of Finance; then Parliamentary Leader of the Labour Party.
