Welfare worker and Māori community leader. Of Te Rarawa. First President of the Māori Women's Welfare League. Born Hohepine (Josephine) Te Wake at Te Karaka, Hokianga, in 1895. Roman Catholic. Attended St Joseph's Māori Girls' College, Napier. Married Richard Gilbert in 1917; they had three children. later remarried to William Turakiuta Cooper in 1941, they had four children. Lived in Panguru, and from 1951 in Auckland. Candidate for Northern Māori electorate in 1963. Prominent in the 1975 Māori land march as leader of Te Roopu o te Matakite. Awarded a CBE in 1974, a DBE in 1981, and became a member of the Order of New Zealand in 1991. Retired to the Hokianga in 1983.
