Cabot, Charles Henry, 1890-1978

Theatrical agent, and collector of entertainment programmes and posters. He was the son of Thomas Cabot and his wife Catherine Amelia. Thomas Cabot is listed as a baker at 36 Abel Smith Street Wellington, in Wises directory for 1906. Charles left the family bakery business and began with the Empire Picture Company in 1911-1912, then toured with circuses as a theatrical agent. He married Beatrice Eva Sutton in 1913. In 1914 he was the touring manager for Barton's Circus (See his advertisement in the Ashburton Guardian on 16 November 1914, page 1), and for Sole Bros Circus in December 1921. Wises directory for 1927 shows him living at 154A Taranaki Street, Wellington. He acted as agent for Carter the Great during his 1933 tour of New Zealand (See Evening Post, 23 November 1933, Page 18). After the Depression he also did publicity for pantomimes and variety shows. He was stage door keeper at Wellington Opera House for the last 18 years of his working life. Part of his collection was given to the Alexander Turnbull Library in 1978, while another part was sold to Norm Nielsen, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. in the late 1990s.
