The 28 Maori Battalion was formed in Palmerston North in 1940 prior to the first intake (known as the 39ers - they registered in Nov-Dec 1939 as soon as Britain declared war against Germany) setting sail for England in May 1940. The whole battalion were known as Te Hokowhitu-a-Tu.
