Atmore, Harry, 1870-1946

Signwriter, painter, politician. Born Nelson. MP. Started as signwriter and decorator, went into business on own account in Nelson; prominent Freemason and Nelson rugby representative; strong temperance advocate, involved in formation of State Control League; local Education Board. Stood for Parliament unsuccessfully in 1902, 1905, 1908; elected as independent Member of Parliament, representing Nelson, 1911-1914, 1919-1946. Minister of Education, 1928-1931 under Ward and Forbes. Died Nelson, 1946. Wife Dorothy Annie (née Corrigan) died Nelson, 1976.
