Somes, Joseph, 1787-1845

Somes, a Tory M. P. in Britain, was one of the first directors of the New Zealand Company (1838). He later became governor on the death of Lord Durham (1840) and carried through much of the delicate correspondence with the British Government relating to land purchase in New Zealand. He married Maria Saxton, sister of John Waring Saxton of Nelson
